Elissar Zakaria Khoury, known professionally as Elissa, is a Lebanese artist regarded as one of the most prominent figures in romantic music across the Arab world. Born in Deir el Ahmar, Lebanon, to a Lebanese father and a Syrian mother, her passion for the arts began at a young age, participating in political critique theatre at sixteen. Her official artistic breakthrough came in 1992 when she participated in the famous talent show "Studio El Fan," where she won the silver medal. In 1998, she released her debut album, "Baddy Doub," which achieved immediate success with its blend of Arabic and Western musical styles. However, it was her third album, "Ayshalak" (2002), that solidified her status as a top-tier star in the Arab world, achieving record-breaking sales. Throughout her extensive career, she partnered with Rotana Records, releasing a series of chart-topping albums, including "Ahla Dounya" (2004), "Bastanak" (2006), and "Tesada'a Bemeen" (2009). Elissa has sold over 30 million albums, making her one of the best-selling female artists in the history of Arabic music. Beyond her singing career, she has served as a judge on international talent shows like "The Voice" and "The X Factor." She is also known for her humanitarian work, particularly her advocacy for breast cancer awareness following her personal battle with the disease.
