Amr Khaled, born Amr Mohamed Helmi Khaled on September 5, 1967, in Alexandria, is a prominent Egyptian Islamic preacher, thinker, and author. He is regarded as one of the most influential contemporary televangelists, known for blending religious awareness with principles of personal and community development. He began his career as an accountant after graduating from Cairo University with a degree in accounting in 1988, a profession he practiced for several years before dedicating himself to full-time preaching in the late 1990s. Khaled gained widespread popularity through his television programs on satellite channels like Iqraa TV. His approach presents a modern interpretation of Islam focused on ethics, productivity, and social progress, resonating strongly with a younger audience. His most notable program, "Life Makers" (Sunna' al-Hayah), launched in 2004, was a call to action for youth to initiate development projects in their communities under the motto "Development through Faith." He is also the founder of the Right Start Foundation International, a UK-based charity that supports development initiatives. Beyond television, Khaled has a significant presence on social media and podcast platforms, where he continues to advocate for values of coexistence, compassion (Ihsan), and social reform.
In 2007, Amr Khaled was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine. The recognition highlighted his extensive reach and significant impact on millions of Muslims globally, particularly the youth, through his modern and accessible approach to religious discourse. He launched the "Life Makers" (Sunna' al-Hayah) program in 2004, which evolved into a widespread social movement across numerous Arab and Western countries. The initiative successfully mobilized thousands of young people to create development projects in education, health, and poverty alleviation, establishing it as one of the region's most successful community-based development movements. Khaled has created and hosted a series of highly successful television programs broadcast during Ramadan, reaching millions of viewers annually. Notable shows include "On the Path of the Beloved" (Ala Khota Al-Habib), "Stories of the Qur'an" (Qisas Al-Qur'an), "In Your Name We Live" (Bismika Nahya), and "Faith and the Modern Age" (Al-Iman wal-Asr). These programs solidified his method of connecting faith with contemporary life issues in an engaging and impactful manner.
Amr Khaled earned a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from the Faculty of Commerce at Cairo University in 1988. He later obtained a diploma in Islamic Studies in 2001. In May 2010, he received his Ph.D. in Islamic Studies from the University of Wales, Lampeter, in the UK. His doctoral thesis was titled "Islam and Coexistence with the West."
