About Moataz Matar

Moataz Matar is a prominent Egyptian journalist and media personality, renowned for his sharp criticism of the Egyptian government and other Arab regimes. Born in Cairo on June 4, 1974, he is the son of former Al Ahly SC player Alawi Matar. He began his career in the early 2000s as a sports journalist, working for the Arab Radio and Television Network (ART) and Modern Channels. During this period, he presented sports programs, most notably "Al Abtal fel Adghal" (Heroes in the Jungle) on Al Ahly TV, and also worked as a football commentator. The 2011 Egyptian revolution marked a pivotal turn in his career, prompting his shift to political programming. He started with the show "Mahattet Masr" (Egypt Station) on Modern Horria channel in 2011 but left in February 2012 over editorial disputes. He briefly moved with the same program to Misr 25, a channel affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, but departed soon after for similar reasons. Following the events of 2013, Matar left Egypt and settled in Turkey, where he launched his most famous program, "Ma'a Moataz" (With Moataz), on El-Sharq channel, which gained him widespread recognition across the Arab world. In 2021, due to the political rapprochement between Egypt and Turkey, his program was discontinued, leading him to relocate to London, from where he continues to broadcast on Al-Shouob TV and various social media platforms.

Moataz Matar's Achievements

In February 2019, Moataz Matar launched the "Etamen enta mesh lewahdak" (Don't worry, you are not alone) campaign, a popular protest movement aimed at breaking the barrier of fear among Egyptians opposing the government. The campaign encouraged citizens to use peaceful means of expression, such as whistling, banging pots and pans from their windows, and writing slogans on banknotes. The initiative garnered significant traction both inside and outside of Egypt. Matar has faced severe legal and political repercussions for his media work. He has been sentenced in absentia by Egyptian courts to multiple long-term prison sentences on charges including "attempting to overthrow the regime," "spreading false news," and "inciting against state institutions." Furthermore, members of his family in Egypt have reportedly been subjected to arrest and security harassment in retaliation for his journalistic activities.
